It is a dilemma that all tea drinkers face at one time or another: to drink organic tea or not to drink organic tea? Organic tea is tea which is made only with natural ingredients, instead of artificial preservatives or additives—such as processed sugars, artificial flavors, artificial colors, and so on. But is it worth it to buy organic tea? Or is non-organic tea just as good? Let’s take a look at the most important pros and cons of buying organic tea.
Pro: Organic tea tastes better
Organic tea is what tea is meant to taste like—no tablespoons of sugar, no fake berry flavoring, etc.; organic tea, when prepared correctly, will delight your taste buds with how tea is actually meant to taste.
Con: It is more expensive
Because organic tea is made only with natural ingredients, it is almost always more expensive than its non-organic counterpart. This is because artificial ingredients, such as preservatives and flavorings, help bring the cost of the tea product down; organic tea is all-natural and therefore requires more expensive, all-natural ingredients to create. The variation in price may depend on the particular brand of tea—some tea brands might have organic products that are a dollar more than the non-organic equivalent, while other (usually more high-end) brands might charge double the price or more for natural ingredients.
Con: Natural does not necessarily mean safe or healthy
Natural ingredients may not be artificial—but this doesn’t mean that they are healthy or good for your body. Plenty of natural plants and herbs can make people sick (or worse)—which is why it is very important to do research on any organic tea you intend on consuming. It’s vital that you know exactly what is in the prepared tea bag or loose leaf pouches before you drink it.
Pro: It does not contain potentially harmful artificial ingredients
Artificial ingredients usually—though not always—spell trouble for the body. Processed sugars, food colorings and more can increase risk of diabetes, heart problems, weight gain, and so on. Organic teas are only made with natural ingredients instead of artificial and potentially harmful ingredients.
